Working as a Live-in Caregiver in Canada

The Live-in Caregiver Program is a special program whose objective is to bring workers to Canada to do live-in work as caregivers when there are not enough Canadians to fill the available positions.

A live-in caregiver is someone who provides care to children, the elderly or the disabled in a private household.

Successful applicants receive an employment authorization allowing them to work in Canada as live-in caregivers. After two years of employment, which must be completed within three years of the caregiver’s arrival in Canada, program participants can apply in Canada to become permanent residents. They may be granted permanent resident status provided they meet certain requirements.

There are three main requirements you will have to meet to qualify under the Live-in Caregiver Program:

Successful completion of the equivalent of a Canadian high school education. This requirement will help to ensure that participants who apply for permanent residence after two years will be able to succeed in the general labour market. Studies indicate that the majority of new jobs in Canada require at least a high school education.
Six months of full-time training or 12 months of experience in paid employment in a field or occupation related to the job you are seeking as a live-in caregiver. You may have gained your training or experience in early childhood education, geriatric care,pediatric nursing or first aid, to name just a few areas. You may have completed your training as part of your formal education. In order to meet the criteria for experience, you must have completed one year of full-time paid employment, including at least six months of continuous employment with one employer, in that field or occupation. This experience must have been obtained within the three years immediately prior to the day on which you submit an application for an employment authorization to a visa officer.
Ability to speak, read and understand either English or French. You must be able to function independently in a home setting. For example, you must be able to contact emergency services if required and to understand labels on medication. You will be unsupervised for most of the day and may be put in a position of having to communicate with someone outside the home. A good knowledge of English or French will also enable you to read and understand for yourself what your rights and obligations are.

Im 23 years old male from philippines still single looking for a live-in caregiver in canada because I love to care with child and eldest because aside from my experience I have 6 sister and 5 brother and I am a 2nd eldest brother of my family, I previously work as a nanny with 2 kids I am the one who hep their homework im the one who prepare their school needs sometimes I get them in their school and prepare their meals sometimes, and sometimes i am the one who wash their clothes and ironing

I am 47 years old, and I have been an elementary, middle school and high school teacher most of my life. I am fortunate enough to have been trusted to teach Spanish to my students of all age groups. I have loved teaching all my life, I have been very successful at it for eleven years in New Jersey. I love living in the United States but, unfortunately, due to budgetary constraints, my sponsoring school district has had to lay me off, so my quest for permanent residency has ended even though two of the three stages in the process had already been approved by the Federal Government.

I have visited Canada before and I did consider applying for work and for permanent residency because I loved it. I did not pursue this any further because the opportunity to teach Spanish in the U.S. was offered to me, so I took it immediately.

I’m Susan, an Indonesian caregiver. I will be 30 this November and I’m currently in a process of renewing my contract in Taiwan. I went to a diploma college specializing at pulp and paper technology in Indonesia.

I worked in Singapore from 2002-2004 and my job mainly was cooking, cleaning, shopping. My employer had two children age 17 and 19 by the time I arrived to work for them. Twice a year my madam’s mother in law (80 years old) and madam’s 7 years old nephew, came from Switzerland to stay with us. She had a heart and overweight problem. I looked after her medicine, helped her took a bath and since she had an overweight problem, mostly I stayed by her side.

My second job was in Hong Kong, but I worked only two months. My employer had me to looked after their son since both of them was working and they also hired a caregiver to looked after their aging parents who lived two blocks from us. A month after my arrival, my madam lost her job and she said she couldn’t afford two caregivers. Therefore, they sent me home since she could looked after her son by her own.

Now I’m working in Taiwan looking after 82 years old man and I’m almost finish my 3 years contract. We are on a process to renew my next 2 years contract. I live only with the elderly but in the evening my employer came to visit and have dinner with us. The elderly has four children and 4 grand children. Sometimes they have a family gathering and I cook for them. I do housecleaning, cooking and managing the house bills and shopping with daily report to my employer. The elderly has a heart problem and three times a week he need to went to a clinic to have a hemodialysis since he also has problem with his kidney. I deal with the doctors from the hemodialysis clinic or the heart specialist, mostly about the elderly medicine, food intake and nutrition and any other changes on the elderly conditions. If there are certain things kind of important and need to get special attention or decision making, I consult with my employer and/or the elderly other children.

We speak simple Chinese (Mandarin) on our daily lives but with the doctors, some nurses, bank personels and the elderly eldest child, I use English because I don’t want to misunderstand important things, since I can only understand simple Mandarin.

I’m willing to learn new things and I have a dream to live and study in Canada (if I can afford it). I hope this long post can help me to get a good prospect employer who can sponsor me to reach my dreams. I know I have long time to wait since my next contract would be for 2-3 years ahead but I heard it’s not easy and sometimes take a longer time to have a good employer.

I would like to introduce myself. My name is Chananchita Chumphonwong or you can call me “Meow”. I am Thai girl with the age of 26. I was born on the 8th of October in 1982 at Phitsanulok province. Due to my father occupation, my family moved and settled down in the countryside of Bangkok when I was 2 months old. My Father is the contractor in constructing company, my mother is a shopkeeper who sells food and works as a part time baby-sitter. That assists me in cooking ability especially Tom-Yum-Krung Fire rice and talking core of children as well. I have one older sister who works in Alex Holiday Co., Ltd. which is the travel agency. So I have an opportunity in practicing my English with the foreigners. I also have a younger brother who is studying Engineering and plan to continue my father’s business. I am in extended family so I have many relatives. Every weekend and long holiday, we have a party, cooking food, playing games and singing together. My parents always teach me to be generous considerate and willing to help people. So our family is beloved.

I graduated from faculty of Food Science and Technology at Suan Dusit Rajabhat University in 2005 and started my work at National Food Institute Thailand of Technological Services Department with is the subdivision of Ministry Industry. In 2006 I have changed my work. Now I am a sale marketing at The Corner Sport Club, at the same time, a researcher for Spa Drink Concept Co., Ltd. I used science of cooking and utilized my knowledge and experience to create healthy menu also. When I have free time I will do my favorite activities, reading and exercise. I read everything and playing many sports such as Aerobics, Aero boxing, Fit Ball, Thai Boxing, Swimming, Squash and Yoga. I love playing yoga because it improves my fitness, clams down my mind and raised my spirit. When I have more times, I like to go out door, have time with nature, paint picture and take photograph.

Currently, I am an Aupair for nice host family in Washington, USA almost 1 year. I have got my experiences with them every day. They are very nice and kindness. I am taking care of twin girls who are 20 months. They are lovely girls and so smart. I get along with them, enjoy taking care and cooking for them. I am having a lot of activities together. Our favorite activities to do are drawing, painting, playing piano, sing a song, reading a book and taking them to the fun factory class, kinder music class once a week and story time at the library. I drive everyday to take the kids to different places such as museum, zoo, park, library and their class.

In 2008, I had got my experiences in took care the children from Kiddy Nursery which is a nursery care center for children age between 1- 3 ½ years. I have set up the yoga program for kids and they like it very much. Besides yoga program, I teach them to play games, sing a song and read a book. One of the kids named “Ome” age 1 year and 4 months old is my inspiration. He is underdeveloped at this his age but he is so kind. Every time he saw someone crying, he will bring the hand kerchief to wipe the tear away. This New Year is ceremony. I teach the kids to perform show in the party by singing a song “Sunshine” while their parents are audiences. They always feel good when people admire their show. Kiddy Nursery helps me to understand nature and development of the kids, know what they want and improve my ability in teaching them with several techniques.

In 1987, I started baby-sitter my brother and helping my mother to take care of neighborhood children. In 1990 I took care of new born baby named “Kob”. He is my aunt’s son. My mother told me that the important things about baby are safety and hygiene. So I had to be careful in doing everything for him. Science Kob have Started lesson in school until now. I have taught him homework. In 2006 when I have worked at The Corner Sport Club, I met many children who come with their parents to learn Badminton, Squash, Table Tennis and Thai Boxing. I also do activity with them. Last Xmas and New Year party, The Corner Sport Club set a party and badminton competition to find a fund for The Lighthouse Training Center for the Mentally Retarded. I joined all activities.

We live in a house near Surrey, and about a 50 minute drive from the larger port city of Vancouver. At the end of a dead-end street, the property is very quiet and you will enjoy a lovely view of the ocean from your cottage. The cottage is a small duplex, fully furnished and private.
